RETHYMNON – PLAKIAS – FRANGOKASTELO

  • Spili Village – a charming traditional settlement. Its name comes from the Greek word for “cave.” The village has centuries of history, with its most famous landmark being the 16th-century Venetian fountain Kefalovrisi.

  • Kourtaliotiko Gorge – mentioned in myths and legends and considered sacred. It stretches between mountains of 984 and 676 m. Canyon cliffs reach 600 m and contain many caves. The trail to the riverbed is family-friendly, with about 250 wide steps leading to a waterfall where swimming is sometimes possible.

  • Plakias – a seaside village on Crete’s south coast. Its name means “flat.” Quieter and cleaner than many resorts, it is ideal for relaxation and as a base to explore the area.

  • Ancient Temple of Goddess Nikita – once the site of the ancient city of Nikita with its temple. On the ruins later rose the basilica of St. Nikitas Church.

  • Frangokastello Beach and Fortress – a small, well-preserved 14th-century Venetian fortress beside a beach with dunes and shallow turquoise waters. Known for the legend of the Drosoulites and the defense against Ottoman forces.
