Chersonissos – Lasithi Windmills – Zeus Cave. Mythology & Mountain Crete
Lasithi Windmills
The first highlight is the famous Lasithi Windmills, located at a mountain pass overlooking the spectacular Lasithi Plateau. This is one of the best viewpoints on the route, with the green plateau surrounded by the Dikti Mountains below. The historic windmills are an unmistakable symbol of the area and create an atmospheric introduction to the mountain landscapes of Crete.
Cave of Zeus
The journey continues to the legendary Cave of Zeus, one of the most famous mythological sites in Crete. According to ancient mythology, Cronus feared that one of his children would eventually overthrow him, so he swallowed each newborn child brought to him by Rhea. When Zeus was born, Rhea decided to deceive Cronus: she hid the baby in a remote cave high in the mountains of eastern Crete and gave Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes instead. He swallowed the stone without realizing that the newborn Zeus had been saved.
Krasi
The final stop is Krasi, an authentic mountain village where traditional Crete feels wonderfully untouched by time. The village is famous for its enormous ancient plane tree and elegant Venetian arched fountain. Take a walk through the quiet streets, enjoy a coffee beneath the plane tree and experience the slower rhythm of life in the Cretan mountains.
