Harakas Village
The journey begins with a visit to the charming village of Harakas, located in the heart of the Cretan countryside. The approach to the village is a memorable experience in itself: a picturesque four-kilometer avenue lined with towering eucalyptus trees starts near the small village of Prassies and leads through a peaceful rural landscape. Harakas preserves the authentic atmosphere of traditional Crete, away from the busy tourist areas. Visitors can explore the ruins of a small Venetian fort, which offers a glimpse into the island’s medieval past and can be visited free of charge. Another highlight is the beautifully restored Church of the Transfiguration, an important local landmark reflecting the region’s rich religious heritage.

Ancient Gortyna
The tour continues to Ancient Gortyna, one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete and a city with more than 6,000 years of history. Once the Roman capital of the island, Gortyna played a significant role in both mythology and politics. According to legend, this is where Zeus brought Europa after crossing the sea in the form of a bull. Today, the vast archaeological area resembles an open-air labyrinth of ruins spread across a scenic landscape. Visitors can discover the remains of temples, public buildings, an Acropolis, an ancient theater, and one of the most remarkable legal monuments of the ancient world—the famous Law Code of Gortyna, engraved on twelve large stone blocks and considered one of the oldest and most complete legal texts ever found in Europe.

Matala
The final stop is Matala, one of Crete’s most iconic coastal destinations. Originally the ancient port of Gortyna, the village gained international fame during the 1960s and 1970s when it became a gathering place for hippies and free-spirited travelers from around the world. Today, Matala combines its unique bohemian history with a vibrant seaside atmosphere. Visitors can relax on the beautiful sandy beach, explore the famous caves carved into the cliffs overlooking the bay, stroll along the waterfront, and enjoy local cafés and tavernas.
