Kourtaliotiko Gorge and Waterfall
The tour begins with a visit to the dramatic Kourtaliotiko Gorge, one of the most impressive natural landmarks in southern Crete. Carved deep into the mountains, the gorge is known for its steep cliffs, narrow passages, and striking rock formations that create a powerful sense of scale and wilderness. The descent is made along a wide and well-maintained trail that leads visitors down toward the gorge floor, where the atmosphere becomes cooler and filled with the sound of rushing water. The return ascent follows comfortable stone steps, making the route accessible while still offering an active hiking experience. At the base of the gorge lies a beautiful waterfall, surrounded by lush vegetation and high rock walls. Depending on the season and water levels, visitors may even have the opportunity to swim in the refreshing natural pools, making this stop both scenic and invigorating.
Preveli Monastery
The journey continues to the historic Preveli Monastery, a significant spiritual and cultural site of Crete. The monastery consists of two separate complexes dating back to the 10th century: the Lower Monastery, which is partially preserved in ruins, and the Upper Monastery, which remains active today as a functioning male monastery. The site combines religious importance with remarkable architecture, featuring traditional stone buildings, peaceful courtyards, and sacred interiors that reflect centuries of monastic life. One of the monastery’s most revered objects is the miraculous cross, associated with local faith and historical tradition. From the monastery courtyard, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the South Sea, with its deep blue waters contrasting beautifully against the rugged coastal landscape, creating a deeply atmospheric and memorable setting.
Frangokastello Beach and Fortress
The final stop is Frangokastello, a destination that combines historical significance with natural beauty. The Venetian fortress, built in the 14th century, stands as a striking reminder of Crete’s strategic importance during medieval times. Within its walls, visitors can explore a small museum that provides insight into the fortress’s history and its role in defending the region. From the ramparts, sweeping views of the Libyan Sea open up, enhancing the sense of scale and isolation of this coastal stronghold. Just outside the fortress lies the expansive Frangokastello Beach, known for its fine golden sand and exceptionally clear turquoise waters. The shallow shoreline makes it ideal for swimming and relaxation, while traditional seaside tavernas nearby offer local cuisine in a relaxed coastal setting, completing the experience with authentic Cretan hospitality.
