Margarites Village
The tour begins with a visit to Margarites, a picturesque village renowned as one of Crete’s most important centers of traditional pottery and ceramic craftsmanship. Nestled among rolling hills, the village is home to numerous family-run workshops where artisans continue techniques passed down through generations. Every item displayed and sold here is handmade, reflecting centuries of skill and creativity. The tradition of pottery in Margarites dates back thousands of years, with archaeological evidence linking local craftsmanship to the Minoan civilization. Visitors can stroll through the narrow streets, admire beautifully decorated ceramics, and observe craftsmen at work while experiencing the authentic atmosphere of this unique cultural destination.
Preveli Monastery
The journey continues to the historic Preveli Monastery, one of the most significant religious sites in southern Crete. The monastery consists of two separate complexes dating back to the 10th century: the Lower Monastery, partially preserved in ruins, and the Upper Monastery, which remains active today as a male monastery. Visitors can admire its traditional architecture, peaceful courtyards, and valuable religious treasures, including the famous miraculous cross associated with local legends and historical events. The monastery’s elevated location also offers spectacular panoramic views of the Libyan Sea and the surrounding coastline.
Preveli Beach
The final stop is the famous Preveli Beach, considered one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Crete. Set at the mouth of a river and surrounded by dramatic cliffs, the beach is known for its rare palm forest, creating an exotic landscape unlike anywhere else on the island. Reaching the beach involves descending approximately 400 steps from the mountain above, rewarding visitors with breathtaking views along the way. Crystal-clear waters, golden sand, and the unique combination of river, sea, and palm trees make Preveli an unforgettable destination and one of the highlights of southern Crete.
