MELIDONI CAVE

Melidoni Cave is located in northern Crete, near the village of Melidoni in the Rethymno regional unit, about 30 km east of Rethymno town. It lies on the slopes of Mount Kouloúkonas and is easily accessible by road, making it a well-known excursion site.

Historically, the cave has been used since prehistoric times, as archaeological finds show human activity and worship dating back to the Neolithic and Minoan periods. In ancient times, it was considered a sacred place dedicated to Hermes, and later possibly to other local deities. The cave also played a tragic role during the Cretan resistance against Ottoman rule: in 1824, hundreds of local civilians sought refuge inside it but were besieged, and many died when the entrance was blocked and set on fire.

Melidoni Cave is famous for its large underground chamber, impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and the memorial ossuary inside, which commemorates the victims of the 1824 tragedy. The atmosphere inside combines natural geological beauty with deep historical significance.

Today, Melidoni Cave is a protected archaeological and tourist site. It is open to visitors, offering guided paths, lighting systems, and educational displays. It remains both a natural wonder and an important place of memory in Crete’s history.
