Milatos Cave – Amazonas Park – Old Windmills. Nature & Mountain Crete

Milatos Cave

The journey begins at Milatos Cave, a fascinating natural and historical site hidden in the hills above the small coastal village of Milatos. The cave consists of a network of chambers and passages and is closely connected with one of the most dramatic episodes in Cretan history. Today, visitors can explore the atmospheric cave and combine the visit with a walk through the traditional village and a stop at the nearby coast.

Amazonas Park

The route continues to Amazonas Park, a unique wildlife park set in the mountains of eastern Crete. The park is home to a colourful collection of parrots, monkeys, lemurs and other animals, many of which have been rescued or cared for here. Surrounded by mountain scenery, it offers an unexpected encounter with wildlife and is especially enjoyable for families and nature lovers.

Old Windmills

The final part of the route leads into the mountain villages and landscapes of Crete, where traditional old windmills still tell the story of the island's agricultural past. Built to harness the strong mountain winds, these stone structures once played an important role in local farming. The drive through the countryside offers beautiful views, quiet villages and a chance to experience a much less touristy side of Crete.
