MILATOS CAVE – SPINALONGA – AGIOS NIKOLAOS

Milatos Cave
The tour begins with Milatos Cave, an impressive natural complex featuring several entrances and a series of interconnected chambers divided by natural stone columns. The cave extends for approximately 200 meters, offering an easy walking path along a rocky trail that allows visitors to explore its interior without difficulty. Inside, the cool atmosphere, textured rock formations, and natural light filtering through openings create a striking and atmospheric environment. Outside the cave, panoramic views of the surrounding Cretan landscape further enhance the experience, making it a memorable combination of geology and natural scenery.

Areti Monastery
The journey continues to Areti Monastery, one of the most important fortified monastic complexes in Crete. Designed with both spiritual and defensive functions, the monastery features a central courtyard surrounded by well-preserved buildings. Within the enclosed area, visitors can see monks’ cells, a traditional kitchen, a bakery, a metalworking workshop, and other functional spaces that once supported daily monastic life. Outside the main enclosure, the complex expands into a broader agricultural and productive landscape, including two large reservoirs, an olive press, and a dairy farm. A striking feature of the site is the presence of 12 ancient cypress trees, symbolically representing the 12 Apostles, adding a strong spiritual dimension to the setting.

Windmills Viewpoint Route
The route then passes through a scenic historic landscape of traditional windmills, remnants of Crete’s agricultural past. These preserved structures stand as silent witnesses to earlier rural life and the island’s reliance on wind power for milling grain. From this elevated area, the journey continues with a descent toward Mirabello Bay, with several stops at panoramic viewpoints along the way. These viewpoints offer sweeping vistas of the coastline, the surrounding hills, and the deep blue waters of the bay, making this section of the route particularly photogenic.

Plaka Village
Next is Plaka, a small and authentic seaside village located directly on the shores of Mirabello Bay. With its quiet atmosphere, traditional tavernas, and coastal charm, Plaka offers a relaxed contrast to more developed tourist centers. From the village harbor, visitors can take a short boat trip to the famous island of Spinalonga, historically known as the former leper colony. The boat ride typically costs around €10, while entrance to the fortress on the island is approximately €20. Spinalonga remains one of Crete’s most visited historical sites, combining Venetian architecture with powerful historical narratives.

Voulisma Beach (Secret Beach)
The tour continues to Voulisma Beach, often referred to as the “Golden Beach” due to its fine white sand and striking turquoise waters. Located in eastern Crete, this beach is considered one of the island’s hidden gems and has been awarded the Blue Flag for its cleanliness and water quality. Its shallow, crystal-clear sea and soft sandy shore make it ideal for swimming and relaxation. Surrounded by natural beauty and relatively sheltered from strong winds, Voulisma offers a calm and picturesque coastal escape.

Agios Nikolaos
The final stop is Agios Nikolaos, a charming coastal town with a rich history and a distinctive setting around Lake Voulismeni. The lake, which reaches a depth of 64 meters, lies at the heart of the town and is surrounded by cafés, tavernas, and a lively promenade. Agios Nikolaos is also known for hosting professional cliff diving competitions every September, where athletes perform dramatic dives from 16-meter cliffs into the lake during the Agios Nikolaos Cliff Diving event. The combination of urban elegance, natural beauty, and vibrant seaside culture makes the town one of the most attractive destinations in eastern Crete.
